Probiotics and prebiotics—many of us have seen various types and brands on the shelves of our local grocery stores, at supplement shops or online. But what is the difference, how are they best integrated into our daily or weekly routine, and can these foods and supplements help prevent colorectal cancer? 

Tianyue Zhao, RDNCD, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Overlake Cancer Center, highlighted some of the research behind the benefits of both probiotics and prebiotics, what to look for on the labels of certain foods, and when to have a conversation with your provider on whether integrating these types of helpful bacteria into your diet could be a good idea. 

From the segment: "Supplements are typically strain-specific," Zhao said, "which allows us to pick and choose the specific strain we're looking for. So that's especially beneficial when treating conditions like IBS or antibiotic-related diarrhea."
