October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Overlake Cancer Center Medical Director and breast surgeon Eileen Consorti, MD, MS, spoke on KING 5 News and FOX 13’s Good Day Seattle to share vital information on breast cancer prevention, treatment and warning signs to look out for during a self-exam.

From the KING 5 segment: “If they can visually see a dimpling in their breast, any nipple crusting, a mass, of course, if you feel a hardened lesion, if you see an increase in breast veins, and also if your breast start looking like an orange peel you need to contact your primary care and get in to see a breast surgeon.”

From the FOX 13 segment: “Clinicians across the United States use a risk assessment model called the Tyrer-Cuzick model, and that takes into account a woman’s estrogen exposure, her family history, if she’s ever had a breast biopsy that shows any atypia and then what’s interesting in that risk assessment model is it also takes into account density on [one's] breast mammography, so any woman with a greater than 20 percent risk on that risk assessment model is at risk for developing breast cancer.”
