Vascular disease is common, although not well-known to the general public, according to Healthgrades. Symptoms of vascular disease are not noticeable during early stages. Many people in early stages of the disease learn of their condition through screening. Vascular diseases include several types of conditions related to arteries, veins and the lymphatic system.
The most common vascular diseases are peripheral artery disease (PAD), atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, varicose veins and Raynaud’s phenomenon, according to Healthgrades.
Not all vascular diseases are life-threatening, but some conditions are serious, making screening important. All can be managed by vascular surgeons who specialize in the disease. Screening for vascular disease includes measuring blood pressure in the arms and legs, an ultrasound checking arteries in the neck and/or an abdominal ultrasound to check for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Certain circumstances, like smoking and diabetes, increase the risk for vascular disease.
Every year, Healthgrades evaluates approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide. Hospital performance is assessed in 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.
