Breast Surgery
Our breast surgery team has deep expertise in treating all types of breast conditions. We offer personalized and compassionate care close to home for families on the Eastside and beyond.
At Overlake Medical Center & Clinics, our expert breast surgeons have worked with hundreds of people facing breast conditions to create and carry out care plans that meet their unique needs. In addition to surgery, we care for all aspects of our patient’s health by offering access to oncology nurse navigators, massage therapists, physical therapists, dieticians, and other providers. We’ll work together to help you prevent, manage or overcome breast disease.
Conditions We Treat
Our breast surgeons have deep experience caring for people with many different conditions that affect the breasts, including:
- Breast cancer including invasive ductal or lobular carcinoma, pre-cancer such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), inflammatory breast cancer, male breast cancer and Paget's disease. Learn more about the Breast Cancer service at Overlake
- Phyllodes tumors, which are rare breast tumors that may be benign or malignant.
- Atypia, when a person has abnormal cells in their breast that are not cancerous but are at high risk of becoming cancerous.
- Benign breast conditions including fibroadenomas, breast cysts, breast pain, mastitis or breast infection, and idiopathic granulomatous mastitis.
- Nipple conditions including nipple discharge and nipple inversions.
We also provide medical advice and treatment for people who do not have a breast condition but have a high risk of developing breast cancer because of genetics, personal medical history and other reasons.
Treatments and Services
We offer many different treatments and services for breast conditions, including:
- Breast conserving surgery known as lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, where a tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed.
- Mastectomy is a procedure where most of the breast tissue is removed. We specialized in different types of mastectomies including total mastectomy with aesthetic flat closure, nipple-sparing mastectomies, and skin-sparing mastectomy.
- Axillary lymph node procedures to determine if the cancer has spread. We offer sentinel lymph node procedure and axillary lymph node dissection.
- SAVI SCOUT localizations and wire localizations which help doctors more precisely locate a tumor and remove it entirely.
- Ultrasound and intraoperative ultrasounds that give surgeons high quality and detailed images to guide surgery and provide the most precise procedure possible.
- Second opinions to confirm diagnosis and discuss treatment and surgical options.
- Evaluations and surgeries for people at high risk of developing breast cancer.
Expert Surgeons Close to Home
At Overlake, we offer expert care close to home for families in Bellevue, Kirkland and surrounding areas. Our surgeons completed additional years of training focused solely on surgery to treat breast cancer — underscoring their deep expertise and ability to give patients top-quality care. For patients who wish to have reconstructive surgery, our breast surgeons also work closely with plastic surgeons to plan the procedure and help each patient feel comfortable and confident.
Timely, Personalized and Compassionate Care
We tailor care to each patient’s unique health needs and preferences. Our patients enjoy a personalized experience, a comfortable environment and compassionate care from our surgery team.
Our team can typically see patients within a few days of receiving a new diagnosis, offering shorter wait times and appointments sooner than many other healthcare systems. Through our multidisciplinary breast clinic, we can also typically schedule appointments with a radiation oncologist, medical oncologist and surgeon all in one morning.
Dedicated Clinic for People at High Risk of Developing Cancer
Overlake offers a specialized clinic for people at high risk of developing breast cancer and other types of cancer. The high-risk clinic specializes in risk factors, including deleterious gene mutations, family history, high risk based on risk assessment model, and high-risk lesion found breast biopsy. Additionally, our surgeons work with people at high risk for breast cancer to discuss whether preventive or risk-reducing surgeries are a good option for them, and they perform those surgeries when appropriate.
