Interventional Cardiology Program
Our interventional cardiology team is a leader in using catheters — thin, plastic tubes — to diagnose and treat a range of heart and vascular conditions, with shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times than open-heart surgery.
Interventional cardiologists diagnose and treat heart and vascular problems using catheter-based procedures. Instead of opening the chest, these doctors make a small incision (often in the wrist or groin) to access an artery. Then, they use catheters to guide tiny devices through the artery and into the heart. This enables doctors to diagnose and repair heart issues in a way that is safer and easier to recover from than traditional surgery.
Patients travel from across the region to undergo catheter-based procedures at Overlake, drawn by our expertise and our history of helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes. Our interventional cardiologists are top experts in catheter-based care and our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is home to state-of-the-art technology. We also offer access to today’s most innovative devices.
In part because of our success with catheter-based procedures, Overlake received a Performance Recognition Award for excellent outcomes from the Cardiac Care Outcomes Assessment Program. This program monitors the quality of adult cardiac care across hospitals in the Pacific Northwest.
Conditions we treat
We use catheter-based procedures to treat a variety of heart issues, including:
- Coronary artery disease, which develops when the main arteries that lead to the heart become diseased or damaged.
- Valve disease.
- Heart attack (myocardial infarction), which is caused when coronary arteries become blocked.
- Heart failure, which occurs when the heart becomes unable to pump enough blood to the body.
- Cardiogenic shock, a medical emergency caused when the heart can’t pump enough blood to the body. It is usually brought on by a heart attack.

A history of innovation & leadership
Our interventional cardiologists were the first in the region to use immediate coronary angioplasty to open blocked blood vessels during a heart attack. We were also the first to use coronary stents to keep those blood vessels open. This helped lay the groundwork for these procedures to become commonplace, and we continue to be leaders in adopting new approaches and devices.
Our outcomes for catheter-based procedures are among the best in the Pacific Northwest. Because of our excellent track record, doctors from across the region send their patients to us for interventional tests and procedures.
World-class care, tailored to you
Our doctors and providers have the highest levels of training in their fields and have helped thousands of patients overcome heart and vascular conditions. These experts collaborate to understand each patient’s unique needs—we meet weekly to discuss new patients, evaluate their conditions and map out treatment options. This enables us to match each patient with the treatment that’s right for them.
