Health Screening Guidelines for Women
We recommend the following preventive screenings for women:
- Blood Pressure: Check at every doctor’s visit or every two years starting at age 20 (based on American Heart Association guidelines).
- Body Mass Index (BMI)/Weight: Check annually for height/weight proportions.
- Cholesterol: Screen every five years starting at age 20 if no history or risk factors. After age 45, screen annually (based on American Heart Association guidelines).
- Colonoscopy: Screen every 10 years starting at age 45 (based on American Cancer Society guidelines).
- Glucose/Blood Sugar screening: Screen every three years starting at 45 unless overweight or have family risk factors (based on American Diabetes Association guidelines).
- Mammogram: Screen annually beginning at 40 and continuing for as long as the woman is in good health (based on American Cancer Society guidelines).
- Osteoporosis: Check bone density starting at 70 unless a patient has other risk factors (based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines).
- Pap smear: Screen every three years, starting at age 21. For women between the ages of 30-65, test every five years if Pap and HPV tests have been negative. Women over 65 who have had normal results do not need to be tested. Women with a history of serious cervical pre-cancer should continue to be tested every year for at least 20 years after diagnosis (based on American Cancer Society guidelines).
- Vision: Undergo eye exams every two to 10 years (based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines).
