After Yearlong Trial, Overlake Medical Center & Clinics to Permanently Offer Aquablation Therapy Treatment for Enlarged Prostate
Overlake Medical Center & Clinics is pleased to permanently offer an innovative, less-invasive treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—also known as enlarged prostate—called Aquablation therapy.
The robotic-assisted procedure uses a high-velocity water jet and real-time imaging to remove obstructive prostate tissue and provide long-lasting BPH symptom relief while preserving sexual function and urinary tract control. Patients also typically have substantially less recovery time in the hospital and, in many cases, can be discharged the same day after the procedure is completed.
BPH is a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges, and, without timely treatment, BPH can lead to severe health issues, such as permanent bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence. Common symptoms of BPH include frequent need to urinate—especially at night—difficulty starting urination, a weak or interrupted urine stream, the inability to empty the bladder and dribbling at the end of urination. BPH is a highly prevalent condition, particularly affecting patients between the ages of 51 and 60, and an overwhelming 99% of patients report the condition negatively impacts their overall quality of life.
Aquablation therapy is the first and only ultrasound-guided, robotic-assisted, heat-free water jet for treating BPH. The system’s ultrasound imaging provides the surgeon with a multi-dimensional view of the prostate, enabling personalized treatment planning tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. Once the surgeon maps a treatment plan, the predictable, robotic-assisted execution enables prostate tissue to be removed in a precise, targeted and controlled fashion.
Overlake was the first hospital system in the Puget Sound region to offer Aquablation therapy and has conducted over 100 procedures on patients with BPH during a trial period over the past year. The organization looks forward to permanently offering this inventive, incision-free option for Overlake patients.
“We are proud to be one of only a select few hospital systems in the Puget Sound region to offer a solution for BPH that provides significant, long-lasting relief,” said Khanh Pham, MD, physician at Overlake Clinics Urology. “At Overlake, we are committed to providing compassionate care to our patients, and this treatment option aligns perfectly with that mission, so we can safely and quickly get folks the care they need and relieve their symptoms within days.”
