It’s that time of year again—snow, ice, storms and ski season! While winter brings plenty of fun, it also increases the risk of slips, falls and injuries. From icy sidewalks to winter sports, there are many hazards to watch out for. Here’s five ways you can reduce your risk for falls and stay safe this season:

1. Gear Up for Safety

Make sure you and your family are using the right safety equipment for your winter activities. Remember, helmets aren’t just for kids—they’re lifesavers for any age. If you’re hitting the slopes, a helmet can protect you from serious injuries. It’s a simple precaution that can make a big difference.

2. Sledding Smart

Sledding is a blast, but it’s also one of the leading causes of winter injuries. Most sledding injuries occur from collisions (63%). To stay safe, use a sturdy sled, choose a safe slope and always supervise children. Wearing a helmet while sledding can also help prevent head injuries—which account for 82% of sledding-related injuries.

3. Build Strength for Winter Activities

Winter sports like skiing, skating and snowshoeing require strength and endurance. Preparing your body for these activities is crucial. Make sure you are putting in the time at the gym or at home before you hit the slopes and mountain trails.

4. Pack a Winter Survival Kit

Be ready for unexpected winter driving challenges by packing a survival kit in your car. Include essentials like food, water, a blanket, gloves, a hat, tire chains, a flashlight with batteries, flares, and a first-aid kit. Planning ahead can make all the difference if you encounter trouble on the road.

5. Shovel Safely

If snow falls, take care when shoveling your driveway and sidewalks. This activity can lead to serious injuries like herniated discs, neck injuries, lacerations, frostbite and even cardiac events due to the physical exertion. Remember to take breaks, lift with your legs and avoid overexerting yourself.

Winter can be a magical time of year. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy the season safely and make the most of everything it has to offer! For more tips on preparing for winter storms, check out the Winter Storm Emergency Preparedness guide from King County, Washington.
