Course Description:
Our 2012 Annual Perinatal Conference will focus on pertinent issues that we regularly face when providing obstetrical care. This conference will feature several presentations on obesity, gestational diabetes, and elective induction of labor with an emphasis on the associated complications and latest guidelines for management. We will provide strategies that aim to reduce the risk of complication for women during both pregnancy and beyond. We will discuss neonatal outcomes related to each of these issues and specifically outline the concerns of late preterm and early term delivery. We will also provide an update on the recent changes that have occurred in the available prenatal diagnostic and genetic screening tests and include a panel discussion of patient perceptions. In the afternoon, we will discuss the latest information about the short and long-term benefits of breastfeeding and how to best support lactating women as well as provide counseling regarding the use of medications while nursing.
Objectives:
State the definition of elective induction of labor and its role, risks, and benefits.Recognize the complications and medical issues that are specific for the late preterm or early term infant.List the primary outcomes evaluated in the HAPO study and how the results led to new recommendations for diagnosing and managing diabetes during pregnancy.Describe the impact of obesity on pregnancy and how to help women minimize their risk of complications during pregnancy and long term.Identify and modify the factors that are predictive of future diabetes and diabetes-associated complications in women with a history of gestational diabetes.Compare the different options and patient perspective for prenatal screening and diagnostic tests.Provide the counseling and support that will encourage women who are appropriate candidates to exclusively breastfeed their infants.Cite the risk of medications transferring into breast milk and be able to counsel patients regarding the risks and benefits of nursing.
