Overlake Offers Free Health Screenings at 4th Annual Eastside Vitality Community Health Fair

Bellevue, Wash. —  Is 140 over 90 blood pressure too high? Are you in danger of breaking a hip? How can you prevent type 2 diabetes?

Get answers to these health questions and take advantage of free health screenings at Overlake Hospital Medical Center's fourth annual Eastside Vitality Community Health Fair, on Saturday, January 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the Overlake campus at 1035 116th Ave. NE in Bellevue. The free event is designed for individuals of all ages and families.

"The start of a new year is a great time to focus on your health and make wellness a priority. By offering important health screenings and teaching people about a variety of health conditions and ways to prevent them, we hope to empower people to take charge of their health," said Craig Hendrickson, Overlake's president and CEO.

To promote good health and regular preventive care, Overlake will offer a variety of free health screenings including blood pressure check, blood glucose testing, cholesterol screening, stroke risk assessment (carotid ultrasounds will be provided to those with high risk factors), peripheral artery disease screening (for those 50 years or older who experience pain with exercise which stops when they rest), bone density screening (must be 40 years or older), skin cancer screening, target heart rate and body mass index (BMI).

In addition, Overlake physicians will present several "Know Your Numbers" health talks throughout the day. Presentations will explain what the current screening recommendations are, what test results mean and whether attendees should follow up with a physician for a more thorough exam.

Overlake surgery staff will demonstrate the robotic-assisted da Vinci Surgical System and children can use real laparoscopic surgical tools to perform a 'candyoscopy.' Attendees can visit information booths and talk with Overlake physicians and medical experts about orthopedics, diabetes, nutrition, cancer care, cardiac/stroke care, psychiatric services, emergency and trauma services. Attendees can also visit a mock Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or take a peek-a-boo tour of the Childbirth Center between noon and 2 p.m.

The Bellevue Fire Department will be on hand demonstrating how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help prepare people in case of a cardiac emergency.

Seattle Children's will present a Sports Injury Prevention activity area, featuring athletic trainers to explain how parents can help lower the risk of childhood-related sports injuries. Children who hop, jump and climb their way through a special obstacle course will receive prizes.
